Christmas 2011 and thoughts for the new year

It's taken me a couple of days to get myself organised to do a Christmas post. A couple of days before Christmas when I drove up to the coast I was definitely coming down with a cold. I had runny eyes and nose, sore throat and generally felt quite off. It continued right up to Christmas Eve, but I woke up on Christmas morning considerably better.

Canberra @ night

Last week (the same night I took the Christmas lights), I met a friend down at Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra right on dusk so that we could practice our night time photography. I am still in the category of beginner so excuse the blur. I also am still playing with settings etc.... it was exciting for me though when I managed to capture a shot with gorgeous colours.  Even the above shot (which was the first one of this lot) turned out with beautiful colours even though for the time of day it wasn't looking that vivid.

I am always keen to show off my beautiful home town, so I hope you enjoy....

Christmas bunting

I don't think I have learnt my lesson with repetitive sewing projects.  When I saw this Christmas bunting panel earlier in the year I couldn't help myself.  Although it was a lot of work, I did enjoy creating the birthday bunting for my niece's 2nd birthday in June.  I thought it would be less work to buy a panel and create bunting this way..... wrong!

Christmas lights

I know I am far from professional, but I've been playing around with night photography on my new camera, and this time of year the Christmas lights are a great subject.  I had been out shooting the sights around Canberra and then on the way home thought I would go past a few places I knew would be looking lovely.

'Tis the season to be jolly

The last few weeks have been absolutely wonderful.  I have on several occasions regretted not having my camera on hand.  On Saturday night I went to our regular girls night in and Bec put on the most amazing dinner.  I have since tried to convince her to do an entertaining blog because she absolutely rocks at it.  When we arrived the house (which always looks amazing), had the prettiest table setting I think I've ever seen - it was decorated with aqua coloured baubles. There was a tree in the family room that matched.  As per usual, the Christmasy music, delicious nibblies and scrummy festive drinks followed by an incredible roast dinner catering to all dietary requirements of the group.  The turkey was to die for.  Ahhhh!!!

Dream, Hope, Believe

I LOVE LOVE LOVE these cards by Dayspring.  They are from the Shirley, Goodness and Merci range which is a play on "Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life" from Psalm 23.  I have this card stuck up on my mirror and it makes me smile.

Hangin' in gardens

Today was the second day of summer.  Canberra being Canberra, we started the day in cardigans and slowly got rid of layers.  Still, it was a gorgeous day to just hang out in the great outdoors.  I asked Amy if she wanted to go to the Botanical Gardens and she said a very confident yes!

Amy and Angela go to the Zoo!

It feels like it's been a little while since I posted anything, but I have been super busy. We've had visitors and lots of other exciting things have been happening... with lots more planned for the next few weeks (can't believe this year is almost over!!!)

So a couple of weeks ago, mum and I took little Amy to the National Zoo and Aquarium here in Canberra.  They boast that it is the only Zoo and Aquarium in Australia which is kinda cool.  It really isn't that big, but there is a good selection of gorgeous animals and some Zoo's I've been to are in my opinion too big.

Def Leppard

Last month I went to my second Def Leppard concert (I know, how lucky to have been able to see them once let alone twice!).  The first one was a couple of years ago, also at the AIS.  Last time they had Cheap Trick supporting them, which I was pretty excited about - Cheap Trick are awesome and they have a stack of great songs.  This time, the boys were supported by The Choirboys and Heart!!!!  Both times I went with my pastor and his lovely wife who are quite possibly bigger fans than me.

Girls weekend to Tilba part2

Sorry it's taken a while to get the second part. I have been super busy as well as sick, and lots of other things going on. Anyway, I got there in the end AND I persisted with loading the photos, cause it took about an hour to load just these 15 pictures.

Girls weekend to Tilba part1

I'm having technical problems with this blog thing tonight, so sorry this post will be in two parts.  Maybe I'm trying to load too many photos?!?

Anyway, I just got back from a amazingly glorious weekend away with some of the most awesome girls in the world on our annual trip to Tilba down the south coast.  We did have a bit of rain, but only once we were safely inside.  LOTS and I can't stress that enough... LOTS of amazingly good food.  We had a couple of high tea's, an incredible roast dinner and divine desserts.  There was music, movies, puzzles, walks, food, drink, and lots of opportunities to take some photos with my new camera.  The above picture is the back yard of the place we stay in.  Is anyone else thinking Wandin Valley?!?!?!

Spring has definitely sprung in Canberra

I've been sitting out in my garden this morning it was just so glorious. The birds were chirping happily and I could feel the heat of the sun through the pergola. The garden is absolutely overgrown at the moment, cause we went away last weekend, so hopefully we'll get some time to neaten the garden up this weekend!

Even though the garden is looking messy and overgrown, I am loving the colours and the feel.  It almost feels like I can see the plants growing!!  I thought I'd share some photos and as I was loading them on I had this Deja vu feeling and realised that a lot of the shots are similar to those taken this time last year.

Kaily Jessica

One of my dear friends gave birth to her second child on Monday... a little girl called Kaily. She is an absolute little sweetheart (I've already enjoyed a lovely cuddle).

I designed a little dragon cross stitch for her based on the pink Lamaze dragon I found for her.  Her mum is into dragons, and since her older brother had a sheep theme (based on his dad's previous occupation), I thought it only fitting that little Kaily should have something her mumma was into.

Ethan's library bag

You may remember, about this time last year I made my little niece a library bag which she has been using to take her bedding between home and childcare.  Well, it's nearly time for my gorgeous little nephew to start childcare, so my sister asked me to make little Ethan a bag like Amy's.

Floriade 2011

As promised, here are some of my Floriade pics.  I think I mentioned last post, I went on the opening day - which can mean that not all the flowers are out yet, but I thought it looked pretty good.  It was busy, but I've seen it a lot more packed.  Hearing the forecast for this weekend, it's a good thing I went last week, cause it's going to be a cold weekend.

I love the vibrancy of these gorgeous red tulips, and the yellow ones just seem to pop out!  I also love photos with water.  Photos taken just after it's rained... when the sun comes out are my favourites.

Delicious perfumes

This is meant to be a post about Floriade. I ended up going last Saturday for a couple of hours, and took a few shots.  I decided to take my tripod for fun and was accused of being a news reporter for a Darwin Newspaper by a strange guy????? Random!  It cracked my sister up, because she kept teasing me about taking the tripod.

Anyway, I am too tired to download the photos off my camera, so I thought I'd add some photos of some of my favourite perfumes that I already had on my computer.  The above is Ralph Lauren Romance.  By far it is my most expensive perfume and my smallest bottle.  I tend to save it for when I am going out at night as it smells like an evening scent to me.

Happy first birthday little one!

I've kept in pretty good contact with some of my friends from high school.  One of them has the sweetest little girl, every time I see her I comment that she is the spitting image of her dad, but I can see her mum in her too.

Lindeman Island - Club Med!

The view of the village from near the boat jetty.
Yesterday I got home from an amazing and relaxing week away at Lindeman Island Queensland with my mum.  It was such a lovely week.  It kicked off really well when I ran into KB at the Canberra Airport on her way to a course she was going to in Sydney. It was great to see her and to have a coffee together before I left. She said she reads my blog, so "Hi KB!!"

Sunset over the pool on our first night.  I was in love with the place already, but it was only a small taste of what we were to expect!

My new camera and spring has sprung!

Well, I finally did it. I've been wanting to get one for a really long time (even before digital), but they've been out of my price range.  I decided this year, if I got a good tax refund, I would go and buy myself a Digital SLR camera. I was so happy when I came out of the tax agent, I went straight to the stores to look!

Of course I did a stack of research online first, and I came to the conclusion that I wanted to give the Nikon D5100 a go.  It had heaps of cool features that I am sure any professional photographer would probably cringe at, but for someone like me who is most definitely an amateur and just wanting to have a bit of fun and take some cool shots, it seemed like the perfect choice.  I've had 4 Canon cameras in my time, so I figure I could spread my spending around!

Bookmark for a Lovely Lady

I made this bookmark recently for a lovely friend of mine Pam.  It's her birthday in early August and unfortunately I wasn't going to be in town to celebrate with her, so I worked on this for a couple of days, staying up till 2am to finish it before I went to Perth.

House Rules

While we were in Perth last week, we were fortunate to catch up with some lovely friends who used to live in Canberra for a couple of years while they were posted here with work.  It was their middle child's birthday and they were sweet enough to let us come along to the disco party.

I noticed this lovely cross stitch on the wall while I was there and asked if I could take a photo of it to put on my blog.  This is the first cross stitch on here that I haven't done myself, but it is hopefully the first of many - because I love sharing beautiful work and this one in particular was stunning.

Just back from the 'Wicked' west

Last night I got back late from Perth WA.  I went over with my sister and her family to introduce little Ethan to his grandad.  There were quite a few lovely surprises while we were over there, including going to see Wicked which I missed out on seeing when it was in Sydney or Melbourne.

The mystery is solved!!

I am so excited.  I have finally figured out the mystery of my favourite cross stitch - who designed it and what company published/supplied it.

I found out that it was put out by Bucilla, and once I knew that it was pretty easy to google Bucilla and Philippians and find it here.  The abcstitch.com site names the artist - Karla Dornacher who as you can see from her website is extremely talented.

My searches so far haven't unearthed any further cross stitches designed by Karla.  I still live in hope.

Anyway, I had to post this straight away as I am just so happy!

Tower bridge is falling down...

This puzzle was one of the many gifts my sister gave me for my birthday.  How cool is it?  It was a lot of fun to build.  She got it from Aldi, so it wasn't too expensive, but it was still a pretty decent quality.

I put it together a couple of weeks ago while watching the show "Go back to where you came from" on SBS.  I really enjoyed the series which involved a group of Aussies going on a reverse journey of a refugee.

Chocolate = comfort

Plate I bought at Buckingham Palace
I was given a beautiful box of pink chocolates for my birthday.  I know it was bought from Aldi, but I have no problem with that as they sell great chocolates, and part of the proceeds from this particular box went to The National Breast Cancer Foundation

Finally it is done! My lavender cross stitch....

This cross stitch goes in my record book for the one that's taken me by far the longest to do.  I bought the "French Lavender Counted Cross Stitch Kit - by Dimensions" from eBay in September 2008, it arrived from a lovely buyer all the way from America about 2 weeks later and I think I started it pretty much straight away.

Let's go fly a kite.... A magical Mary weekend

We've only been waiting half a year for this, but we finally got to go and see Mary Poppins on stage this weekend.  Woot!!!

The birthday twins turn two

Look at these gorgeous little girls.  They got together a couple of weeks after their birthday to share gifts and have a baby-cino.   They are just so gorgeous when they get together.

Best way to store your beautiful threads

It might look a bit messy, but these are my embroidery threads for my cross stitching.  A few months ago, my lovely friend from work who shares my love of stitching, gave me a lovely gift.  She gave me some thread storage spools.  I excitedly filled them up with my skeins that were pretty much full, and then I threw out the packaging, so unfortunately I can't recall the correct name for them, but they are apparently Aussie made which is so cool.

Birthday Season

One of the reasons I have been quiet on here recently is that we've just had birthday season.  Amy celebrated her 2nd birthday and I had mine too.  It was a busy couple of weeks cooking cakes, having tea parties and generally just getting spoilt by my generous family and friends.

I heart books

Ok, the above isn't technically a book... it's actually a notebook that I purchased in Rome with some leftover Euro's I had when I was at Fiumicino airport.  I think you can buy these types of notebooks here in Australia too, but it's the sort of thing I would look at and drool over, but wouldn't buy without a reason.

I think I mentioned in my last post that I was addicted to buying books from Book Depository.co.uk with it's special May sale.... well, I'm ashamed to say there have been further purchases.  Today being the first of June I thought to myself "*phew* less temptations now that the special is over", but NO, they've decided to add another week to their special.  I can just see myself purchasing more.

What's been happening???

It might seem a bit random, but I don't really have any pictures of  what's been going on lately, so I thought I would post some pictures I have taken of some very cute magnets I have on my fridge and freezer.

Ok, so what's been happening?  I guess there are three main things that have been consuming my time:

Tea party?!

I know, it's been a while. I actually have tried a couple of times to put up a new post, but for some reason it just hasn't been working for me.  To my relief today everything seems back to normal.

I bought these Maxwell & Williams tea cups and plates a couple of months ago (actually quite soon after my Aunty's 60th Birthday).  She received the red cup and saucer from a friend and I completely fell in love with it.  Then I was wandering through David Jones just a week or so after and saw them.  When I saw the different colours I couldn't decide which one I wanted, so I got one of each!  The bonus was that I got 30% off because they were having a deal, and so I got the four sets for $70!  I think that's pretty darn good.

Wills and Kate tie the knot!

This photo was on the front page of the newspaper that sits near my desk at work.  All day yesterday I walked past it and got more and more excited about the events to come!
Last night was awesome!  I loved every moment of their big day.  We had an amazingly delicious dinner of ribs and creamed potato bake and garlic bread.  Put the kids to bed then went out to watch a surprisingly simple yet elegant wedding.  I guess I say simple because it wasn't too over the top for a Royal Wedding, but yet it didn't disappoint in any way.

Wedding fever

I seem to be getting bagged out about tomorrows Royal Wedding.  I think the main reasons why I am excited is:
  1. They are two people who genuinely seem to love each other and want to be together
  2. I find it refreshing for me to have half the news filled with a "good news" story instead of the usual doom, gloom and sometimes down right disturbing stories
  3. I've always been a bit of a monarchist
  4. Perhaps I am turning into a romantic?!? and
  5. I'm looking forward to a lovely night of fun, food and giggles with my girls

Girl time

Probably not the best shot of the picture (the pot plant has taken over a little), but this is one of my most favourite pictures.  My sister and I spotted it when we were up at Nan's soon after our first trip to Noosa Qld.  We had been on a wonderful relaxing trip with some very close long time friends and when we saw this Kelly Lane picture we both instantly saw the two of us (one blond, one brunette although both a LOT skinnier than we are) sitting at the beach enjoying a drink and each others conversation - girl time!

Welcome little Kaylee Jayde

My cousin's second baby arrived last Tuesday.  I finished this cross stitch exactly 7 days ago (yes, the day she was born).  It's taken me this long to download the photos from my camera to post this!!

I won a prize!!

I've had a subscription for Handmade magazine on and off for many years now.  There aren't usually that many competitions in them, but there was one for some [make it], products and as I am a known cross stitch addict, I couldn't help but send in an entry.  I think I had to write something in 25 words or less and mail it in.  So for the cost of a 60c stamp I won all of the above!

Funny Money and a new favourite place!

Photo from http://www.theq.net.au/
I had an absolutely wonderful day today with the lovely ladies.  As part of my year for appreciation of the arts, for part of her birthday pressie, I decided to buy Mum a ticket to a show at The Q - which is the performing arts centre in Queanbeyan.

An experiment for the kids..... and Happy Birthday Mum!!

Kids are great for experimenting for, cause they think even the most simple and imperfect things are pretty cool.  I was inspired to make these picture holders when I saw something similar in Spotlight.  They were pretty expensive for a piece of wood and some pegs, so I thought I would give it a go to make something similar and personalise them at the same time!

I went straight around to the wooden craft and found some 40cm long pieces of decorative wood.

Another new little person joins the world!!!!

Things have been really crazy around here.  We went up to the coast again this weekend.  This time it was to introduce little Ethan to the rest of the family who hadn't met him yet.  It's also a week away from mum's birthday and family is really important to her, so we wanted to have a cake to celebrate with her.

Anyway, it was go go go the whole time.  I've been really looking forward to doing a post on this little birth sampler cross stitch I made some lovely friends over in the USA.  I was thrilled to get the message that they had received it on the weekend as I didn't want to post this until I was sure it had gotten there in one piece.

A few more cards....

I had a wonderful weekend last week.  On Friday I had a very productive day.  I did a stack of stuff with my family history research - I really get lost in that stuff.  Then I met my sister, niece and nephew and we caught up with another friend and her little girl at the National Science and Technology Centre - Questacon.  I haven't been for years, but it was a lot of fun.  I especially was interested in the earth stuff, and with all these natural disasters happening so regularly, I had been wanting to go back and try out the earthquake simulator.

Some more cards

I bought a packet of plain white embossed cards recently.  I got them out to see what I could make with them and I happened to have bought some metalic pencils which I rubbed over the embossed part.  I always seem to have stickers and card shapes.  I think they look quite simple but effective.

Happy Birthday Canberra

Balloon in front of the Old Parliament House, Canberra.  The New Parliament House is the building behind with the enormous flag pole.
Today was the first day in a while that I have woken up feeling half decent.  This head cold has been awful - but at least I am now on the mend.  Anyway we were going to take Amy to go see the hot air balloons for Canberra Day (sorry, I need to stop here and say I can't believe wikipedia has a Canberra Day page!!!), however it wasn't good timing for her, so we went without her.

As it turned out, they weren't going up this morning due to bad weather conditions.  It was a shame, cause it is quite a sight to see all those beautiful balloons up in the air and reflected into Lake Burley Griffin.  To keep the crowd happy, they inflated a few of the balloons, but they stayed tethered to the ground.

Surprise 60th!!

My aunty celebrated her 60th last week.  She has recently moved away from her hometown after 35 years.  We thought we'd put a call out to see if anyone would be able to make it up there to help her celebrate, and much to my delight, not one, but three car loads of people made the 6+ hour trip for her!

We mainly kept it a surprise to avoid disappointment if any of them couldn't make it last minute, but also because knowing my aunt, she wouldn't want the fuss made of her.
I spent a good 3 hours decorating the room.  As such - you'll get a picture of it from all angles....
